Alpacas, Llamas y Vicuñas

We ended our day at this fabulous little farm where we set up camp. The family was delightful and welcoming. Cats, dogs — and alpacas. The alpacas were so gentle and friendly! This place is about 35km from Abancay and only got electricity when the road was paved in 2003.

We started the day before 8am winding and winding up the mountain from Nazca towards Abancay  about 35km later we got stopped by road construction this delay set us back about two hours. It was already a long day with 8 hours in the saddle planned. Most of the day riding we were between 14,000 and 15,000 feet. As long as you don’t stop the forced oxygen is great. When you stop it is hard to breathe!

I almost forgot to mention that the mars-like landscape is full of alpacas, llamas and vicuñas. I’ve never seen these animals simply roaming the mountains.
