What a riding day today! As we left the trash and stench from Trujillo behind us we ventured off on a gravel road shortcut. The 50km took us just over an hour. Most of the road was in good shape with only a few dodgy areas.
The road up to and through Cañón del Pato was pretty crazy. Dangerous doesn’t accurately describe it. Mostly one lane zig zagging up and over the mountain with sheer drop offs one one side and cliffs on the other. The road was full of giant potholes, gravel and debris from rockslides. Did I mention tunnels? There is something like 30 hand-carved, one lane tunnels. Once we were forced to turn around as a bus forced us back.
A fellow rider gave us a tip on lodging in Caraz. The Casina Lara is an absolute gem. It’s is also a tequila/mezcal distillery! I had the best warm shower here since Bogotá. Each room was S/165; you can do the math. Enjoy the pictures - the video will be out soon
