Ejército del Ecuador

We left Cuenca for Loja but before we got there we decided to make a run for the border.  No, not Taco Bell, the Peruvian border. We found a nice hotel (the nicest in town I think) for $20 per person in Macará, Ecuador.

The road was much like the last 1400 miles - winding, mountainous, 2 lane roads through beautiful scenery. For those in LA, think Angeles Crest Highway for 7 days! The big difference is that, although most of the roadway is in great condition, you must be cautious for giant potholes or landslides across the highway. Not the mention folks like to graze their farm animals along the road.  Pigs, horses, cows and sheep are often tied to a stake to munch the grass along the road. Only goats seem to roam freely.

Dogs, by the way are EVERYWHERE! I think Darwin has selected only those dogs that do not wander into the highway. The dogs walk, sleep and whatever along the road. They don't bark nor cross the road.

The highlight of the day was the military checkpoint outside of Macará. We were stopped and the Ejécito del Ecuador which reviewed all our documents. Once completed, conversation broke out and lasted about 30 minutes! We would have stayed longer but we wanted to get to town and find a hotel before dark. These were very friendly guys and we enjoyed our time speaking with them.
