3-day Ferry

After a few days rest in Punta Arenas, we departed for Puerto Natales on Wednesday. The ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Yungay only runs once a week. Everyone kept saying the ferry is about 40 hours… But that doesn’t count the time you board to the time you depart…add all that and it’s about 60 hours! We boarded Wednesday at 8pm but didn’t depart until about 5am. We arrived about 2am but didn’t depart until 7am. Supposedly they are not allowed to load or unload in the dark.

Nonetheless, we spent three nights on the ferry. The seats reclined but it was difficult to sleep. Food, well…it was like food served in a prison on metal trays.  Breakfast was a ham and cheese sandwich on stale bread.  Lunch and dinner was rice, pasta or potatoes with something on top.  Had I been better prepared I would’ve brought my own food!

After the second night we stopped in a little village called Puerto Eden. They have no roads and only get around by boat or boardwalks. It’s a fishing village. The arrival of the ferry is a big deal as food and supplies are off-loaded by hand into boats for distribution around the village.

Sergio made a surprise appearance arriving a week early at the ferry. However, upon departure he went his own way again.
